The 4908 has an upgraded driveshaft and diffs, high flow filter and resonator. It has Revo spec drive line components. The chassis is slightly longer and the wheels are a bit bigger.
So if you want a T-Maxx, I say get the 4908.

The 4909 does have reverse and it also comes with a receiver battery pack and charger, but to me a reverse gear tranny set-up is just one more part ready to break that costs money to fix. I would rather have the tougher upgraded drive line.

If you don't care about reverse and want the truck to be very tough, get the 4908, if you want reverse and don't mind fixing and upgrading, get the 4909.

If the reverse breaks, will the truck still work? or is it mandatory to have the reverse in tact

Depends how it breaks. It will be a part of the center differential, so if just the gear breaks you could maybe just take it out. I've never had a nitro car with reverse though, so I'm not entire sure how interlocked it is the other systems.
