This is great Nuttcaze. I've enjoyed your heli vids and I just got one of these for Xmas.  I've been practicing on the sim while lokking for a place to fly.(seems it will take a lot more space to fly then the helis.

Worst part for me is I have lots of places to fly mine, but the freaking wind won't co-operate

Oh I added the second part, just basic info which will be helpful for others (since you already have one too  Wink ).

Yeah I know what you mean.  I live in North Jersey and the wind and snow have been plentiful lately.
Moving to central Jersey soon and should pick up more space.

At one point i was going to buy that. But the way they made the transmitter......a sliding thing instead of the stick. Ugh. And you will find 3ch a lil less "exciting" When your ready for big boy E.D.F's nitroplanes has pretty good ones that come with li-pos.

Three channel is a good place to begin, but size (wing area in particular) make for the most stable flyers and are more forgiving (easier to recover) than smaller models like the J3 .

Anything under 4' wingspan and a 480 size motor is going to be limited to very calm days (3-5mph) for new pilots. And, even when you're experienced, the small planes are still harder to manage on windy days.

I suggest that new pilots will have more days to fly (wind less of a factor) and better results with a larger plane like the Super Cub from Hobby Zone. www.hobbyzone.com .

I put larger Dubro wheels on the SC for easier grass take offs and Dubro skis on it to fly it off the snow.

If you decide to buy a Super Cub I've made some other mods to mine that I'll be happy to share. They make the Super Cub powerful enough to fly in 10-15 mph winds, fly inverted and do multiple loops (done up to 10 in a row) with ease.

Happy landings

The transmitter put me off at first too. But since it is only a 3 ch the slider just works the throttle, leaving the right hand to control
rudder and elevator. Not quite the same as 4 ch helis with rudder on left stick. But for the price(at less than 1/2 the price of super cub)and after discussing it a bit with Andy, I decided to give it a shot.

I have seen numerous crashes of this model on youtube and most of the time the pilot just picks it up and hand launches it again. Seems to be pretty crashworthy. Time will tell, and nitroplanes has plenty of spare parts should they be needed.

I guess in the end you only get what you pay for.  I was also looking at the mini cub. man that it a small plane!

Oh believe me I plan on getting a EDF jet sooner or later, but I wanna do all my crashing with the J3 first

I wasn't too fond of the Tx either but I figure if it starts to annoy me I'll just stick a Spektrum Rx in it and use my DX6i for it. But then again I'm not overly picky.

As much as I'd like something with a bigger wingspan, the 2 major factors keeping me away from them right now is

1 - I drive a Mercury Grand Marquis, its a big car but not that big

2 - I really don't have any intentions of rebuilding any parts, I'd rather just buy a new part and install it, I'm never gonna take the time to learn how to actually build a plane, way too much skill for me, well not really but I don't have the time, I have way too many hobbies.

But once I buy a new car this summer, or rather a truck, then I'm gonna look into a bigger plane, but I'm gonna go BIG, I'm talking Giant Scale, something with at least a 6' wingspan, an aerobatic plane. Nitroplanes has some killer prices on kits for them.

EDF's are great. Art-tech's F-18 is very stable and fast, but not too fast, for a starter EDF and has good low speed characteristics. One thing migh want to know: You should have a good strip of level surface for take offs. While hand launching is not impossible, it is difficult.

The little throttle slider Tx's feel kind of foreign at first, but they work fine. You won't even notice it after awhile. I switch back and forth from a lot of different Rx's. Sometimes I'll be flying and I start trying to put rudder in on the left stick and then think, "Oh yeah, this is a 3ch."  Roll Eyes

The telemaster series is good if you get into giant planes. If you want to go real big http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmKdA6L_MWk you're going to need a bigger truck: An eighteen wheeler might work.  Grin

Finally got to take my Piper Cub for a flight today, it was awesome. Alot easier then the sim too? I have a vid that I'm gonna upload later but I'm gonna see if I can get another flight in before it gets any darker, hopefully the wind hasn't picked up any more.

thats what the guy at my LHS said too, I don't care if it flys then its cool to me, heck even if it don't fly, anything RC is cool to me  Wink

me and a friend of mine were talking about making our own local RC club. One thats open to anything RC, only for people that like all things rc, none of the tension between groups crap, if someone has a prob with helis, planes, cars, etc, then they can get the hell out of the club, its no fun with them kinds of people around.

You betcha'  I haven't done any cars yet, but I will in the spring. Grin Wish I lived in your area I'd sign up with your club. Nothing but "seperatist" clubs around here. You have to belong to 3 clubs to take in the whole spectrum or if they "tolerate" you as one or the other it's a "token" approval.  Undecided

I plan to get into cars too, before starting up this hobby last Jan, it had been 20 years since I last had anything RC. one of my last rc cars was the Red Arrow from Radio Shack, I hope to find another one someday, I had soo much fun with that car  Grin, now because of the lower cost of the RC hobby I want it all, I'm gonna be getting me some boats this summer too, I'm gonna have

Helicam
boatcam
carcam
planecam

I'm sticking cameras on it all, lol
