3D,,,simply means ' a three-dimensional form '

Acrobatics;  'a spectacular, showy, or startling performance or demonstration involving great agility or complexity.'

Geee,,,,I wonder which one is more accurate in describing flying a heli?

I think Ernie is on the right track,,,it has to more than a simple flip or inverted flight to be considered "3D",,,which I feel is a grose misnomer for what we are doing. Acrobatics would be more descriptive.

Stringing together two or more maneuvers in a controlled sequence would be acrobatics (3D).

The term 3D is not going away,,,,but whoever started using this term was probably a marketing guy trying to distinguish between FP and CP helis.

I agree 100%......what we do with ccp heli's is definitely acrobatic...I guess I didn't make that clear enough when explaining the AMA reference.......although the (terminology) separation between sport flying and acro for planks is of the same mind set as with heli guys.......you need a specific kind of plank to do the extreme maneuvers, as with heli's you need a CCP to do 3d..........don't know of to many FP heli's that fly inverted..... or a Piper Cub that can pull off a Pitts Special stall and role maneuver.......

Well, I can say that prior to reading this post I thought that 3D was anything inverted on a heli and hovering maneuvers on a plank, but that is basically a mixture of what I've been told.  Now, I have no idea what would be considered 3D.

Kinda funny though that anyone would get all worked up about another person calling themselves a 3D pilot, who the hell cares, just worry about yourself, or I'm gonna send Wickedclown over there to fly his helis around you, just see what happens (just messin' with ya there wicked  Wink )

Good point Ern, "worked up" probably isn't the right way to put it.

I just sense this undertone of "you can't call yourself a 3D pilot just cause you do a flip!"  Sort of thing going on, and not just this thread, but around others.  So, maybe this is why Randy asked in the first place, because he's been sensing this undertone.

As for me, when I did some inverted stuff, I started saying that I can do some 3D maneuvers, but it doesn't necessarily mean that I'm a hard core 3D pilot, like Ern said, just mild 3D.  If someone wants to be a jerk about it, they could say "That's not 3D, you're still not good enough to be a 3D pilot, you can't say that you do 3D!"  Well, what would be the point in that?

So, what exactly would someone have to have in the way of skills to be able to wear a readyheli t-shirt (eat, sleep, 3D) without being a wannabe?

He's probably talking about me. Yes, I do get worked up with the newbie doing a backflip then saying 'I do 3D' when he can't hover nose in.

I think Mr Butz is the one worked up.lol.....

I don't really consider myself a 3D flyer although I can do some 3D stuff.
I just don't do a rapid procession of balls to the wall,on the deck 3d only flying.

My most receint flight with my 450, I was doing some inverted flight , a few loops and barrel rolls, then I thought I was doing what is called "controlled chaos" but I realized it was'nt me, it was the linkage rod that came off making my heli look like flying chaos! LOL!.... so I guess that does'nt count right dditch66?

I'm with McK and Ditch on this one. I can do loops, rolls, flips, some inverted, etc. What I would consider "mild 3D". However I only consider myself a "Sport Flyer". Not a 3D pilot. IMO if your not flying the same manuevers as the pro's in competitions, then your not a "3D" pilot. Just saying you are is nothing more than stroking your own ego.
