hello all, im new to the site and to the hobby as well... i am looking for some advice concerning what i start with.
i do like the truck and truggy style, not so much into the on road or the true buggy. i know that i want a 4x4 and atleast a 3.0 engine. how ever i do not want to spend a bunch of money to start out with. i have been looking at exceed madstorm pro race 4.6, but i have read alot of bad things in forums about exceed. so i am asking the experts here what to do. i am looking to spend between 2 and 3 hundred on a rtr setup. i also want a chassis that is easily upgraded, or atleast easy to find parts to install. any suggestions?

As four as a four wheel drive monster truck goes, and with at least a 3.0 (.18 cc) engine, I cannot name any directly within your price range that I would suggest.  Doesn't mean they don't exist, but I will not recommend products that I do not believe are of good quality.

The closest match that comes to mind would be the HPI MT2.  If you are willing to put down just a little bit more cash, it sounds like just what you want.  It is 4WD and has a 3.0 engine and HPI also has pretty good availability of parts and upgrades.

Exceed, well, its fairly simple.  They are very cheap to buy, so they are very cheaply made.  It's mostly a matter of preference between the scales.  When it comes to the racing scene 1/8 is definitely the most popular.

1/8 scale:
Pros: Bigger parts means more durability, faster, more RC and engine choices, bigger parts can be easier to repair/upgrade, more popular than 1/10 at the track
Cons: More expensive parts and engines, more fuel used, requires a bit more space to operate

1/10 scale:
Pros:  Smaller vehicle requires less room, cheaper, better fuel economy, cheaper parts
Cons:  Much smaller selection of parts and vehicles (especially engines), more likely to break than 1/8

Its just a matter of what you want to do with it.  I'm a 1/8 guy myself, but different people want different things from their RC.  The main barrier that stops some people from going 1/8 is the extra costs, but I think its worth it.  The 1/8 trucks and buggies are just so tough; you can beat the hell out of them and often get away unscathed.  My current buggy is on its second engine and has ran through probably near 11 or 12 gallons of fuel so far(most of which has been rough running on the track)and the wing mount broke once.  That's it.  (Now of course other parts like bearings and clutch shoes had to be replaced but that is normal wear and tear that happens to any RC).  I'm not saying 1/10 will fall apart in your hands, but they are definitely not as tough.  So in a way, the higher prices of the 1/8 parts are less of a cost gap from the 1/10 than you may think because the parts break less often.

thanks for the info... i am really leaning toward a 1:8 scale... i have also found a truck that better suits my needs and wants much better than the exceed... does ne one have any advice or reviews of the redcat racing earthquake 3.0? seems to have much better chassis and suspension parts than the exceed and in the price range im looking for.
