It looks like there are a number of guys that are building the EXI 500 CF or planning to. I thought it would be nice to start a build thread where guys can put up their builds and add advice.

To start, which specific parts (and upgrades) would you suggest:
1)   Servos (aileron, elevator and pitch)
2)   Tail servo
3)   Gyro
4)   Motor
5)   ESC
6)   Blades
7)   Battery
Cool   Other items and upgrades?

1.Servos-Align DS510's on cyclic.
2.Tail servo-Align DS520.The 520's are good for cyclic too but they are fast.
3.Gyro-Align GP750
4.Motor-Scorpion 3026 1400kv with 14/15T pinion.
5.ESC-Align 60amp.
6.Blades-Align 425mm CF.
7.Battery-Turnigy 2650mAh 6S 30/40C

I have the Align DS520s on my cyclic,,,they are GREAT.

I use the 14T pinion on the Scorpion HK 3026-1400 motor,,,great power and torque,,,2880 rpm headspeed.

Other than that,,,Ernie nailed it!  GREAT set up!

What do you mean..."Other than that"....??
You repeated me almost word for word.
I said 520's are also good for cyclic.I use them myself.
I also said use a 14 or 15 tooth pinion on the 1400kv motor.lol.....

Don't get your panties in a bunch Shocked,,,I was just validating what you said and clarifying for folks that the 14T pinion is a better match!!

Yeah,I started with a 15T.I think it turned about 3100 RPM.
14T definately works better.
15T works but you should turn down the throttle curve some.

Good point elk Wink

to-fast-to-new,,,,,,,thats a GREAT set up. 13T pinion is a little weak,,,,try the 14T for better headspeed. I get 2880 with mine,,,same motor and 14T. AND,,,,that heli is crying for some good CF blades,,,there's a world of difference in the 500 with CFs.

Just my opinion,,,,,,I LOVE my 500!! Grin

I didn't like my 13 that came with the kit, bought the 15 innov8tive sold me on with the motor and never measured the head speed. I guess i'll have to try a 14 out. What are the dissadvantages of running 3000 rpm plus on a 500? Just wear it out quicker? It is very responsive

I've never seen my 500 bog and for me and what i do, it is a pleasure doing business with. The align cf blades model f have been my favorite blades on it so far. They make alot of noise when you throw it around.

Now,,,this is just my opinion; and I have an opticle tachometer so I measure my exact headspeed. I have the Scorpion HK 3026-1400 motor. With the 15T pinion it runs over 3100 rpms,,,,that's screaming. The motor ran hot and the power-punches would cause the motor to bog. It also made the cyclic servos work harder. I switched to the 14T and now my headspeed is 2880 at 100%,,,,the power-punches are a lot better,,the motor never gets above 110 degrees and most importantly, for me, the flip and roll rate is quicker because the cyclic servos have less resistance. It just flew better and was less stress on parts.

I thought about dropping to a 13T but I'm more than happy with what I have,,,,,and gyros like speed. When I idle it down a little,,the gyro gets a little jerky.

With the 14T,,,I can do anything I want with the sticks and the heli will do it,,,,like- right now. With the 15T the heli would be playing catch up a little.

I have the same motor, lucien told me to run a 15 so i did, no question asked. So far the only thing i've seen any temperature in is the battery packs, and it is less than 110. the motor and 80 amp esc are cool to the touch, cooler than my hand. Have my head set at 12 degrees +-, +3 at hover in norm and st1. It launches like a rocket and never bogs, in fact the motor accelerates. I took some video of it yesterday at the river but i fly so tenative, im embaresed to show it.

Never hurts to try something. I just assumed i was good to go. Tachs are pretty cheap, i guess i need to get one instead of depending on head speed calculators with everything i got going on.

Kloner,,,,,from what you described; 'It launches like a rocket and never bogs, in fact the motor accelerates.'  one of two things is happening. First- your throttle curve is setup at less than 100% at mid stick so yea,,when you punch it,,it would accelerate. I have my idle-up throttle curve 100% all the way accross. Or secondly,,,when you punch it,,,it does, if fact bog initially and what you hear is the motor trying to catch up.

FYI,,,here's the tachometer I use,,,works great!!;;
