Exceed 25Amp ESC

Just I received this ESC (25 Amp Exceed Brushless, Volcano series) from Hobbypartz.com a few days ago. It is supposed to be ready to use. When I plugged up the motor, receiver and battery, I got a few beeps and the motor "burps for about 2 - 3 seconds and quits. I've tried reprogramming the start mode, timing and throttle position. At one configuration, the motor runs roughly for about 3 seconds before it quits.
Can anyone get me on course as to how to make this thing work, or does it appear to be defective?
