I'm wondering... I see many helis in all of your signatures, from various companies, many of which do not have compatibility/interchangeability between their transmitters.

How many of you own multiple "nice" transmitters for each of the various types (Spektrum/JR, Devo, etc.)? Or do you have one nice TX for most of your helis, and bought the rest RTF?

I know the DX7s I have is a good solid TX for everything it can be used with. How many other "standards" are there? I assume Walkera's Devo is another... is there a third, fourth, etc.? Sticking with modern models, 2.4ghz.

What are the equivalents (to the DX6i, or DX7s from Spektrum for example), and what made you decide to try different ones? Was it one specific heli/quad you really wanted to get your hands on?

Finally, what do you prefer? If you have any larger helis where it's up to you what RX to pop into them, which TX/RX did you end up going with?

So I'm looking around for spare parts and came across some really cool fuselage / full canopies / bodies like the "Airwolf" and some others. The ones that I found say they are for the Walkera CB180 which is 460mm long. Anyone ever bought one and tried to put it in another helicopter other than the CB180? I was thinking about trying to put one on my Master CP which is 440mm long. Anyone? How hard could it be, maybe a few adjustments / mods?

So, brought the helis over to show my father when I visited last weekend. Yesterday I got a call from him. Turns out a friend of his was also into r/c helis, but got out of it a while back. He still has all his stuff--including a "medium sized" Align TRex, brand new, never even taken out of the box. My father doesn't know anything more than that. I'm assuming it's probably a 450 sized heli.

Going to call and get more information. Not sure if it's a kit or RTF or BNF/ARF. It was implied that if I was interested, it would be available at a discount, along with "everything" that goes with it. Again, this is through the telephone game with my father, so I need more details.

I'm not sure I'm ready for, or want a larger heli yet. I also worried that when I got to these larger (more dangerous? other than to my wallet) helis, I would have wanted to find someone local to help me out, or be there to possibly keep me from doing something stupid.

I'm curious if it has a flybar or not, which receiver he has for it, and if no to either/both of those, what it's going to take to switch over to be able to use my Spektrum DX7s and get rid of the flybar (as far as both work involved and money). I've read some posts about people saying that dealing with tuning a flybar on larger birds can be frustrating, and it seems like everyone is moving away from them as the option becomes available.

I also know there is a lot more maintenance involved in larger CP helis, looking for and minimizing vibrations, locktite down all the parts that aren't supposed to move, and pre/post flight checkups to be sure everything is in order. Whereas my experience so far has been "Hrm... that all looks like it's supposed to and the servos are responding to my input *flips throttle hold off and flies away*."

Other than the availability of FBL systems, have there been any other breakthroughs in this design over the last couple years that I should be aware of? How new are brushless motors, or were they always used in these larger models? I'm unsure how long ago he was into this hobby, or how old the kit is. I may as well just be better off buying a new updated version when I'm ready, depending on how much I'd need to change down the road.

I might be be paranoid with all my above questions, as I've heard the Trex 450 is one of the go-to helis, been around for quite some time, and is proven, with lots of support/information/parts available for it.

I don't believe there is any rush in picking it up, it can sit there for as long as it needs before I graduate into that category, is my understanding. Just looking for information so I can appear to have half a clue with how to follow up on this, or if you think there are any questions I should ask him when I talk to him.

Will post again with more information as I find it.

So the V400D02 that I ordered was crushed by the shipper and they are paying me for it. While I was waiting on it I had time to do more research and I'm thinking about getting something else instead. I got the RC Helicopter bug bad after I bought my first V-911 and went bananas with the spending and ordered all of the non-coaxes listed in my signature all within a month of each other. I've fallen in love with each in their own way but I have to reel in my spending and this will be my last one for awhile.

My goal was to get a helicopter that flys like the Master CP but is a bit larger. I'm not flying 3-d at all, just gaining experience daily and will eventually get there. Now that I have a better feeling for what I want, I need to decide if I want to go ahead with the V400D02 or go with a V450D03. I'm constantly in here asking question after question, but I do it because I always get good advice. Both of these helicopters are similar in size and are similar in price. What do you think? Oh, and for what it's worth I'm going BNF with the Devo7 that I already have for now, I may upgrade the controller once I actually get some skill!

So I've been practicing with my Blade nano almost every night, for at least one pack, if not four. Mostly just hovering, though I've started trying to drift left/right, front/back inside the confines of my living room.

I've also tried practicing with larger CP helis in Phoenix v4. Even with rates set low and expo on the helis in Phoenix, the helis seem to want to get away from me in a hurry. They love to drift away from me, ignoring minor correction that would otherwise bring the nano back in line for me in the real world... so I give a bit more correction and the virtual heli flies back to me as if it were a missile.

It seems like some things are far easier in Phoenix than in reality (I tried flipping/rolling and going inverted a couple times, which was much easier than I thought it would be), and others are just the opposite. I'm wondering which of these are my inexperience, and which are just due to constraints of the simulator so I'm not constantly second guessing myself. I've read that Phoenix isn't the best at training on how to hover, but is far more useful for learning things beyond that, I guess perhaps I didn't get how true this might be?

My nano is now set up with DR down to 40/60, 30 expo. (0 on rudder) in the real world. In Phoenix I've tried a few of the 500-700 series helis with DR around 50, 60, 80, 100, and expo. at 25. I've tried adjusting these both in my DX7s tx as well as in Phoenix itself.

I can keep the nano in about a 1m cube of air without too much difficulty, better than that for most parts of the flight. Haven't crashed (knocking on wood right now) in many days with it. I practice lots of takeoffs and landings. I try to turn it out to 11 and 1 o'clock, though I've done most of my side-on and nose-in practice with the Solo Pro 270A.

Thoughts?

Any suggestions? I don't want to get into big money, I just want something that will take a decent aerial video. I have an Egofly LT-712 Hawkspy coax that came equipped with a camera and it works great on that helicopter, I had thought about removing it from that helo and adding it to my Master CP but not sure how to run the power, ON/OFF, etc.

I want something that a V911 can carry, I just ordered a keychain video camera from Amazon that I'm gonna try. But mainly I want something for the Master CP. I figured people on here would have experimented some. I did a forum search but most of it is a little dated info.

Who's tried something on the V911?

On the Master CP?

Would something with it's own power source be the best or is there a way to wire it (I have a Devo 7 and I read somewhere that the "gear" toggle could be used for this.

OK, so I bought my son (8) and I a couple of heli's which we have thoroughly enjoyed so far.

While I think he's good with what he has for now I'm looking for that next best heli for myself.

We are both beginners but so far I have come a long way with just the heli I have now.

I have a 3.5 channel heli which seems to work well for the price but is something I still consider a toy.

I still have a ton more to learn but was wondering what you would suggest as a next good heli.

I don't have a ton of money so I was hoping to find something that will keep me moving forward in learning about heli's for some time to come.

Maybe something in the $150 to $300 range?

I was thinking a 6CH but I'm not sure my skillset is anywhere near that level yet.
I am looking at the Walkera V400D02 but I'm sure that's a heli that will take me quite a while to master.

Cheers,

Greetings all,

I figured I'd start a new thread for this problem I'm having, in case it's of some use to anyone else rather than getting lost in the 4+ page intro posts I started a week or so ago. I did some searching but I'm not entirely certain my problem is the same as other things I've heard.

Last week I picked up a Blade 120 SR, completely by accident when visiting my LHS for the first time. Got it home, charged the batteries, charged the transmitter overnight and the next day after work, I got it up in the air. All was well. It was very exciting! I was having a blast, just trying to keep the thing hovering about 6-10 feet off the ground.

Thursday night I went out to fly it again and was doing a bit better. Got brave, and started flying it side to side, always tail facing me. After that, still feeling braving since it seemed pretty stable, I tried to spin it around a couple times, then gave it the smallest bit of forward movement to go in a circle. Everything was going great, I was crashing very little if at all, especially on my last 2-3 batteries.

And then everything went unhappy. I'm not sure if I lost control and panicked, or if this problem started just about at that moment, but I had a crash. I was able to stop the blades before impact, but it was a bit harder of a landing than I had previously. The canopy got a small crack in it (that I repaired with scotch tape on the inside, good as new), and the battery holder's little plastic tab the screw goes through, broke at the point of rotation, so now the battery swings freely. I'm going to pick up another of those tomorrow night, when I can get to my LHS again (I was able to temporarily keep the battery stable by tying some dental floss around the arm of the battery holder and the top of the skid arms, holds it nice and tight).

Ever since then, I get the heli up in the air, and almost immediately it starts to spiral back and to the left, in a counter clockwise direction, until the effect becomes far too much to correct for... which usually only take about 3-5 seconds. It seems to be an additive effect, meaning if X amount of right control stick stops it at first, it takes even more than that to keep it from continuing, and eventually gets to the point where no amount of correction can fight it.

I inspected all the linkages, the blades, the tail and tail blade. A couple tiny nicks in the main blades, but nothing that I would imagine would cause this(?). All the linkages seem to be in place and both servos appear to be working when on the ground.

If I hold the heli securely and ramp up the throttle, the tail rotor spins up or stops spinning as appropriate with left/right rudder.... though, and I'm not sure if this is a symptom or not, the tail rotor seems to pulse high/low, or if I give it hard right or left then return to neutral, it doesn't spin up/down the tail rotor to return to neutral. I'm unsure if this is just the gyro trying to compensate since I'm holding the heli in place at the time or not though.

I'm going to bring it in to my LHS tomorrow night and see if their heli guy has any ideas, but I'm wondering how bad this might be... I've heard other people talk about fried gyros or 5-in-1 boards though I would hope this isn't the case already... I only had the heli two days. =/ I've also heard some talk about bad tail motors, or bad main motors for similar problems. I hope this isn't the problem already... I may have only had 6-7 batteries through it at that point.

Thoughts, ideas? Any way I can test out the 5-in-1 board, gyros and otherwise?

Thank you!

Edit: Link for those of you with a similar problem to how I fixed my problem:

I didn't see any talk of light painting when doing a quick search on the forum, so not sure if this has been posted or not yet. Stumbled on it this morning.

http://hackaday.com/2012/05/14/helic...on-your-brain/

For anyone not familiar with low light photography, the idea is to keep the shutter on your camera open for extended periods of time while moving a light source, or beam of light into the view of the camera. The surroundings will usually expose normally, or darker (depending on what effect you're going for), but anywhere the light source or beam has been, if it's sufficiently bright, it will leave trails.

So these guys attached some lights to a heli and flew it at night in front of a camera, doing just this. Pretty neat effect! I'm tempted to try something like this with my little S107G since it already has lights on it.

Is it good or bad when two of your hobbies meet in unexpected ways? =D

The only time I get a fast head spin is when the stunt switch is on.. If I'm in normal mode and at full throttle the motor Boggs down the heli never leaves the ground and in stunt mode it only gets about a inch off the ground... Does anyone know what the problem is

Hello, I recently bought an E-Razor 450 carbon FBL, but it doesn't seem to work right, I have new servos in it that seem to work fine, and the problems are, the tail blades don't seem to center correctly, the gyro changes from steady red to steady blue every attempted flight, my main blades have a weird pitch, it can't move the swashplate much forward past center, and can't really move the tail blades much past center either and they always go back to the same weird position. Whenever I try to start it up it spins and I can only get it to stop by moving the cyclic control all the way, and that's as far as it will let me go, the one time it seemed to work right it flipped over about a foot from the ground and burned out the servo and broke a main blade (this is why they were replaced). I've tried a new Rx and Tx and neither seem to work, I've also connected the gyro to my computer and set it to beginner mode but that only seemed to make it worse. I suspect the problem is the gyro but I don't know what about it or what to do, and if it's any help I have a Detrum GY48V gyro but I don't know if it's FBL compatible, some help would be much appreciated, thanks.

...my wallet may never forgive me. =(

This post is mostly an introduction, with an open invitation for anyone else to chime in and tell me where I might be going wrong, or if I'm misunderstanding something.

So, on a whim a couple days ago, I finally picked up one of those cheap little Syma S107G helis. I've seen them at stores. I've seen them online. I really couldn't believe $20 would get me something so complex, and not have it be an utter disappointment. I was finally won over by reviews, and yesterday an Amazon Prime box arrived with my name on it. There went my productivity for the evening. I spent the better part of the night (im)patiently charging, resting the battery, flying for 4-5 minutes, resting the battery and repeating the process. I got to the point where I could get it to go (mostly) where I want, and spent quite a bit of time just trying to keep it level while hovering, then moving forward/backward without dipping down or flying up during the transition. Best. $20. I. Have. Ever. Spent. Perhaps that's not entirely true, but it entertained me far more than any movie night at the theater for the same price has lately.

I expected the learning curve to be quite a bit more... steep? Well, I couldn't just let it go there. So, to the internet I went. I learned the difference between co-ax, fixed pitch and collective pitch helis, and that as you add channels they seem to get quite a bit more challenging to fly, but most people seem to report that after graduating to the next step, that they're having even more fun with it once they get their head wrapped around it.

So here I am, and I think I want to try out a 4-channel FP micro heli next. A long time ago someone told me that if I wanted to get into flying r/c helis, larger (to a point) was better than these tiny micro sized ones. Is this still true? I'd really like to stay indoors for the time being--I'll get far more flight time that way and it would be less likely this hobby would end up in the corner collecting dust.

My first reaction was to just go buy another Syma, as it appears they have a 4 channel micro heli for sale now, though I understand that the controls are different on these than they would be on (m)any other, and larger helis due to the mode involved. I'd rather learn the more standard way if I decide I'd like to continue with this hobby.

A lot of posts here seem to recommend the Solo Pro 260A or 270A, and it seems as if a lot of you own these yourselves based on signatures. I understand this is another micro-sized heli like the one I have now, but with the added 4th channel to allow side-to-side movement, if at the price of a bit more difficulty controlling it. So, searching for them I'm finding a lot of S-Pro, or V911 or other terms. Are these clones? Variants? The same thing? Should I be specifically looking for something called the Solo Pro 260A or 270A? I'm very excited about the prospect of having removable batteries so that I could have a few to charge up with and swap out as needed rather than this 50 minute charge, 10 minute rest, 5 minute fly, 10 minute rest cycle. I'm very partial (read: addicted) to Amazon Prime, though don't mind shopping elsewhere if what I need isn't available. The convenience of free 2nd day shipping is just hard to ignore.

I also understand that there are simulators you can buy for your computer to practice with, though most of these requires having a full transmitter, compatible, to work with. I'll admit I've done almost no homework on transmitters yet, and the only experience I have with them is 15+ years ago when I was younger with R/C cars and boats. How far have they come since then? I'm noticing 2.4ghz is the new "standard" of sorts, but is it really a standard? Is there a decent tx I can pick up that I could grow with if I continue with the hobby to eventually 6-channel helis? What if I want to poke my head into the world of quad/penta/octo copters? Would the same tx work with those, or are there physical differences between the two types? Could one of these nicer controllers talk to the Solo Pro 260A/270A? I know it comes with a tx, but just curious.

The simulators seem like a neat thing I could bring in to the office to waste away a lunch hour on every so often on my laptop. Are they really useful as learning tools and worth the investment? I wouldn't entirely mind buying a decent tx... worst case scenario I'd likely find use for it on one of my other hobbies (too many in number, and far too many of them are expensive... =( why am I here again?).

So... thoughts? Suggestions? Am I on the right track? Where should I be looking to find a Solo Pro 260A/270A and parts?

Thanks for the read!

I just ordered a Walkera Master CP and wasn't paying attention as to which remote it came with. I assumed that they were all Devo 7's, but I just noticed that the one that I ordered has a Devo 7e. When looking at the Xheli and other sittes, the only thing that stands out is that the 7e costs more than the 7, but I'm guessing that doesn't mean much. From what I was able to find, the 7 has much more range but the 7e has some better features (but pics show that it has less toggle switches). I still can't quite see what the difference is.

Just curious, I was hoping to get some opinions because if the 7e sucks I may send it back before I open it. Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I'm a beginner, 27 yrs old

my budget is around $200 for my first heli

here are some of the helis im looking at:

1) MJX F465 (only like the remote that it come with, not sure how good the heli is)
2) Solo Pro 228P (love how this heli look and everything, only need to charge 30min and can fly 8 mins, but dont like the remote control that it comes with)
3) WL Toys V911 (love it too, the batterry is so tiny, and comes with a charger that charges two batteries at once, but don't like the fact that it's a tiny micro ones)

suggestions? or any of these should be eliminated for beginners?
if suggesting particular one, please let me know what's the pros and cons.

Thanks in advance
